My dog knew I was going into labour before I did. I know because she started behaving strangely and wouldn’t come near me. In fact she hid up under a table. This is very unusual for her. How do you think she knew?
Chosen Answer:
Dogs can sense these things because of the chemical change in our bodies. When certain health issues arise, chemicals in our bodies change causing us to smell a bit different to them. Our previous dog, (oh how I miss him!!) did the same thing the night I went into labor when my second son. I didn’t notice anything, but he sure did, except he was the opposite of your pooch, he wouldn’t even go outside to go potty unless I was right there with him, lol! It was crazy!
This is also what helps lot of service dogs. They rely on their very keen sense of smell, hearing, sight, and their abilities to sense things in the atmosphere around them to alert their owners or other people to an episode in diabetics, epileptics, etc… before it happens, and to help guide the blind or deaf. I’ll see if I can find a decent article on it and add it on here once I find it for you.
ETA: Here’s a few articles I found you might find interesting, about animals sensing not only medical changes in a person, (though I couldn’t find many that touched on labor specifically, I’ll keep looking), but also the possibility of them being able to ‘predict’ natural disasters such as storms and earthquakes, which has been a theory for YEARS, I myself keep an eye on my pets and the animals around my house if I know we have storms coming in!
