What should I do during an earthquake?

Due to the recent string of strong earthquakes, I am curious what we should do during an earthquake?
Is it best to hide under a table, go outside to the garden or what.
I mean if I hide under the table, wouldnt that just fall on me if the roof falls. Or if i rush outside atleast i am less likely to be hit with something falling right?

Chosen Answer:

You should grab a soft object to protect your head and hide underneath a sturdy piece of furniture, eg. a table, which would help to block any debris falling down. If you can’t find any furniture, then you should hide in the corner of the room, because the ceiling might topple and if it does people who are standing in the centre of the room will be hit worst.

If you are outdoors, I think you should try and get away from any buildings to avoid being injured by wreckage. The killer is not the earthquake itself but the falling debris.

(EDIT)
Oh, also, you should switch off the electricity supply to prevent any fires from occurring.
